It's important to remember, though, that the group wasn't just Kozelek. For the first three full-lengths, it was Kozelek on vocals and guitars along with drummer Anthony Koutsos, bassist Jerry Vessel, and guitarist Gorden Mack. He released it on Supreme Recordings, a label owned by John Hughes and under the auspices of Island Records, which reminds me that he's the only person from Red House Painters who also went on to act in movies. Red House Painters were fairly popular in the early '90s, but details on them were scarce.

Another woman, who used the pseudonym Andrea in Pitchfork's reporting, says she met Kozelek in 2014, when she was 19. Meanwhile, the accuser known as Andrea alleged Kozelek exposed himself to her in a hotel room in Raleigh, North Carolina in 2014, when she was 19 and he was 47. He also allegedly initiated sex that she wrote “really wasn’t consensual” in a series of Facebook messages to a friend the next day; the missives were shown to Pitchfork. The two carried on a long-distance relationship for several months afterward; Andrea described some encounters that were consensual and others where “the lines [were] really blurred,” including multiple instances of public sex that she felt pressured into. But for me, it is and will always be the most difficult to get through. Rasa, who requested to use only her first name in this article, claims that Kozelek nonconsensually masturbated in front of her in a hotel room in the European city where she lived.
Uncut review - Album Of The Month
Mark Kozelek’s third album with Sun Kil Moon, April, was released through Caldo Verde on April 1, 2008. In addition to these releases, Mark also released the Night Talks solo EP as a free giveaway for direct purchases through Caldo Verde Records. On October 6, 2017, Caldo Verde Records released Mark Kozelek's collaborative album Mark Kozelek with Ben Boye and Jim White.
When you've traveled the road together, from Oslo to Bergen, you're bonded for life.
Instead, she alleges, Kozelek brought her to his hotel room, where he undressed and made sexual advances on her, which she refused. She then claimed Kozelek pleaded for her to stay the night, and they later had sex, which Ella categorizes as rape. At the time, Ella was a 20-year-old college student while Kozelek was 50. Ella’s boyfriend at the time confirmed to Pitchfork that she told him she had had non-consensual intercourse with Kozelek. October 31, 2008 • Sun Kil Moon's Mark Kozelek is remarkably adept at crafting somber, epic ballads like the gorgeous "Lost Verses," which opens April.

” She left his room and called her then-boyfriend, telling him about the incident; he later confirmed this to Pitchfork. Instead, she claims, Kozelek brought her back to his hotel room alone, where she says he tried to persuade her to have sex with him. She says she convinced him to call a cab for her, but that afterward he began masturbating in front of her and attempting to take off her clothes.
Benji was the sixth full length record by Mark Kozelek's Sun Kil Moon. The album was released February 11, 2014 and features guest musicians Steve Shelley, Will Oldham and Owen Ashworth. On August 20 of 2013, Mark Kozelek's Caldo Verde Records released Mark Kozelek & Desertshore, the third record from Mark Kozelek and Phil Carney's side project, Desertshore. 2013 also saw the release of Mark Kozelek Like Rats, 2 live albums, and the Mark Kozelek and Jimmy Lavalle's collaboration, Perils From The Sea. Both Mark Kozelek & Desertshore and Perils From The Sea made Uncut's top 100 best albums of the year.
The record was uncharacteristic of Kozelek (though he was prone to covering songs by his favorite artists) in that it is one of the shortest full-length albums of his to date, clocking in at just over thirty minutes. Mark Edward Kozelek is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, record producer and occasional actor. He is known as the vocalist and primary recording artist of the indie folk act Sun Kil Moon and founding member of the indie rock band Red House Painters, with whom he recorded six studio albums from 1988 until 2001. Inspired by classical guitar music, Kozelek recorded Sun Kil Moon's fourth studio album, Admiral Fell Promises (2010), as a solo act, and continued to record mostly alone on its follow-up, Among the Leaves (2012). Sun Kil Moon's eighth studio album, Common as Light and Love Are Red Valleys of Blood, was released in February 2017, which was followed by their ninth studio album, This Is My Dinner, in November 2018. The tenth Sun Kil Moon studio album, I Also Want to Die in New Orleans, was released in March 2019.
They had lunch together on the day of the concert, and returned to his hotel room afterward. Kozelek had kissed her before the performance, and repeatedly asked her to spend the night at his hotel, but assured her that he would not make sexual advances, she says. She was aware that he was interested in her, she says, and open to some sort of relationship herself.

The album lyrically focuses on themes of pain, desolation and loss and is musically diverse, ranging from the folk-pop of “Grace Cathedral Park” to the shoegaze of “Mistress” to the stark “New Jersey” and onto the soundscapes of “Funhouse” and “Mother”. In the hotel room after the show, Kozelek stripped naked and “pounced on me,” Rasa says. She went along with his kisses at first, she says, but repeatedly pushed back and said no when he attempted to escalate the encounter beyond that point.
Red House Painters are more of a definable rock band on Colorful, though, with fuzzed guitars, martial drumming, and more basic structures; on the slinky post-rock of "Japanese to English", you can imagine them in a practice space, jamming it out. Originally released on November 3, 2003, Ghosts of the Great Highway received superlative reviews, moved quickly to the #1 on college radio and has become one of singer-songwriter Mark Kozelek’s most loved and best-selling albums of his 14 year career. He impugns online “bitching and whining”, but hides behind one-way email exchanges, balks at the idea of his peers speaking about him and issues tirades (and sometimes, sexual advances) from the cowardly remove of the stage, with the get-out clause that it’s a performance. If anything remains to separate Kozelek from his work, it’s that his music preaches that the least we owe one another is decency.
In 2006, Kozelek was invited by Toronto indie rock label Paper Bag Records to exclusively contribute to their See You on the Moon! Songs for Kids of All Ages compilation with his original song "Leo and Luna." Then in November 2006, Kozelek released a live album titled Little Drummer Boy Live. Universal Themes was the 7th full length Sun Kil Moon Album, released in 2015.
It's great to have it in the box, though sonically, it would've made more sense to pair it with either Rollercoaser or Bridge. Patterns of behavior emerge across the accusations from both articles. Several women allege that Kozelek brought them to hotel rooms with assurances that he wouldn’t try anything sexual, then suddenly removed his clothes and made advances. Many of the women were Sun Kil Moon or Red House Painters fans who first met Kozelek while attending one of his shows. Journalist Martin Aston passed on a tape that Mark Eitzel had given to him. Never before or since had I received a demo that was 90 minutes long!
